Shirley Jackson was genius!

From Wikipedia:

The Haunting of Hill House is a 1959 novel by author Shirley Jackson. Finalist for the National Book Award and considered one of the best literary ghost stories published during the twentieth century,[1] it has been made into two feature films and a play. Jackson's novel relies on terror rather than horror to elicit emotion by the reader, utilizing complex relationships between the mysterious events in the house and the characters’ psyches.
I came across this book because it was referenced in a new book I just read. I regret to say, I  can't recall the name of the new book that I read. :-( I'm sure it was full of murder and mayhem cuz that's just the way I do!

Anyway, this book is amazing! I have seen both versions of the movie and loved them but never thought about there being a book. I am trying to read the characters as written and not see them as movie stars but I gotta tell ya, Liam Neeson just keeps on popping up in there instead of the round and bearded doctor she describes. Sue me!
This is one of those books where you want to read another chapter before bed but you are too scared of what might be in that chapter so you get up and turn on all the lights on the way to your room so when you go back and turn off the first light you can race to the next one dreading the fact that at some point you have to turn off that last light and dive for the bed! Love it!
